St. Lukes Donates to Meals on Wheels
Each year St. Lukes Episcopal Church a fundraising St. Patrick's Feast
to support worthy causes in our community and overseas. The event
committee selected our Meals on Wheels and the Community Care Car
programs as the recipients for 2009. This is the 18th year for the
event. Catered by Morrison's, the dinner was held on Thursday, March 12
at the Great Hall of St. Lukes at the Corner of 2nd and Lincoln here in
Woodland. Baby sitting and a free hot dog meal was provided for kids 12
and under. Staff and volunteers gratefully accept St. Lukes generous
donation.
Additionally, St. Lukes continues it support to Gary Griffith and his
missionary work bringing needed education in Bulgaria. St. Lukes
provides support to Liga International. The church also supports
two Woodland doctors, Dr. Robert Miller and Dr. Jonathon Perlman, and
their medical staff to fly to a clinic in San Blas, Mexico where they
donate their time and medical expertise to bring ophthalmology care to
many people in need. The service of Liga International, lovingly known
as the "Flying Doctors of Mercy," through which these doctors offer
their support expertise, is the only chance for eye care for the people
of San Blas and the surrounding communities.
Meals on Wheels:
Last year we served
over 82,000 noontime meals
(approx. 375 per day) to almost 1,400 seniors, 60 years and older,
throughout Yolo County-Davis, West Sacramento, Winters, Esparto, Knights
Landing and Woodland.
Meals on Wheels is a world-wide concept with
organizations everywhere, who provide nutritious meals to people who are
homebound and/or disabled, or would otherwise be unable to maintain
their dietary needs. The daily delivery consists of a meal; a
nutritionally balanced meal to eat at lunch time.
In an effort both to
cover costs and to maintain the elders' sense of dignity, the program
asks a small fee based on the individual's ability to pay.
These payments are entirely voluntary, no one is
refused a meal due to their inability to pay.
Our seniors must rely
upon us, and our program relies on our sponsors, donors and volunteers
to help us serve the needs of our Yolo County seniors.
Our Vision
No senior will go hungry in Yolo County.
Our Mission
To
nourish and enrich the lives of individuals in
Yolo County with emphasis on those age
60 and older, by providing
nutritious meals
to active and homebound people; thereby, promoting their health,
well-being and independence.
